The Red & Black wizards travelled south across the border into the tundra like climate of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK. The pitch was good to soft in areas - obviously the good old fashioned covering of dog poo had kept most of the overnight frost at bay.
It was a nervous start for both teams smarting from defeats the previous week. It was tight and scrappy until Brunsmeer decided that they would stamp their authority on the game. Despite an injury to centre back James Hanson (as well as substitute Lewis Drake who pulled out in the pre-match warm up) the back four of Alex Palmer, Hanson, Joseph Kelley and Keanan Wainwight looked as solid as a rock. Keeper Joshua Weaver didn't have many shots on target to deal with. The game sprung into life a after about 20 minutes when good play and an excellent pass from Jamie Bywater setup the multi-layered Mike Conneh, who still had a bit to do before firing past the home keeper. Chesterfield could have equalised straight away but the striker not only beat the keeper, he beat the far post as well. The half finished with the visitors well on top, despite being unable to extend their lead.
HALF TIME: CHESTERFIELD TOWN 0-1 BRUNSMEER ATHLETIC
Again, it took a while for both teams to settle into a rhythm after the restart. Once more it was the AC Milan look-a-likes who found their passing game first with good play through the midfield of Bywater, Conneh, Joe Holland and sick note Kieran Warren. Good work down the right by Warren and a wicked ball into the box from Palmer put in the deadly Reece Clegg who made no mistake powering the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0. Chesterfield had the ball in the net, but the goal was chalked off as an eagle eyed linesman correctly called play back for an offside. Within minutes, a short corner routine between Warren and Wainwright, which had obviously been worked on for hours on the training ground, bore fruit as the latter whipped the ball into the box for Conneh to get his second and Brunsmeer's third. It could have been more - Nathan Smith and James Allen were both unlucky as the ball held up in divots seemingly caused by a tractor, halted goal bound runs in their tracks. Bywater came close but was just over and Holland also had a good effort saved by the keeper. In injury time, the Brunsmeer net minder supreme Weaver had to be withdrawn due to frost bite - Allen manfully stepping into the breach for the last 17 seconds....
FULL TIME: CHESTERFIELD TOWN 0-3 BRUNSMEER ATHLETIC
A good day at the office for Brunsmeer putting a run of 3 league defeats behind them and keeping a clean sheet for the first time this season. In the words of winning manager Andy Hanson "Can you see one?" - no I can see three.
